Elizabeth Fournier is known as The Green Reaper, an eco-mortician. She and her husband run a full-service funeral home, Cornerstone Funeral Services, in Boring, Oregon. Her interest, however, is in “green burials” which among other things omit embalming, bury the body in plain wooden caskets and, if possible, use simple grave sites without concrete burial vaults. Fournier contends that while cremation is cheaper to the customer green burials are more environmentally friendly since they do not use large amounts of carbon-based fuels associated with crematoriums.
Fournier has a new book, The Green Burial Guidebook: Everything You Need to Plan an Affordable Environmentally Friendly Burial, which explains the underlying ideas and options for green burials. She will be at The Book Bin, 450 Court St, Salem, Friday, June 15th at 7:00 pm to discuss her book and answer questions.
