Once again, Marion County individuals, businesses and organizations that work to create a more sustainable community will be celebrated at the annual Green Awards.

In an event that will provide entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, drinks, auction items and an awards show, attendees will be inspired by the many ingenious ways Mid-Valley community members find to go green.

“Our theme is Comunidad Verde (Green Community),” says sponsor Straub Environmental Center, and it will be an opportunity to “embrace the rich diversity of our community and experience the traditional food and music of Mexico.”

Green Awards include recognition for Sustainable Business of the Year (for both large and small businesses), Recycler of the Year, EarthWISE Business of the Year and Green Product or Service of the Year.

One champ this year is Spring Valley Dairy, receiving the award for Large Business of the Year. Spring Valley is a Salem-based food distributor of high quality dairy products that employs 80 people and services about 1,000 customers, almost entirely in Oregon.

Of the many sustainable practices that brought the company recognition, one that especially excites Stephanie Hoy, Human Resources Manager, is its use of approximately 175,000 gallons of biodiesel every year.

“This equals a carbon reduction of 34.4 tons,” Hoy says, “the same as not driving from Portland to New York 26.4 times, or planting 108 trees.”

Spring Valley was previously awarded EarthWISE certification from Marion County Environmental Services, an agency that helps companies achieve sustainability goals through education and by encouraging recycling, energy savings, waste reduction and more.

Spring Valley Dairy is among more than 100 EarthWISE businesses and organizations in Marion County.

“It is Spring Valley Dairy’s goal to be the most sustainable and environmentally-friendly food distributor in Marion County, “ says Hoy, “so we feel so grateful and honored that the EarthWISE program recognized our efforts in such a fantastic way!”

For great food and great green ideas, there is no better place to be on March 10.
