Selling art in a small market when people worry about shrinking incomes, and when online venues continue to take bigger bites of the pie, is a challenge. How does a gallery remain fresh, attract customers, and showcase it’s artists in the best way possible?  In the case of Elsinore Framing & Fine Art, a longstanding staple of downtown Salem’s business and art community, the answer is to be creative and evolve with the changing times. In the words of general manager Brent Allen.  “The Elsinore Framing & Fine Art is working hard to become one of Salem’s premiere galleries for local artists’ work.”

Last year the gallery celebrated its 30th anniversary with an updated look and a new focus on local art and artists.  Monthly shows in Gallery 444 were joined by a new Featured Artist Showcase, which is a vignette type showing rotating every 2-3 months in the main gallery.  They have also started hosting art classes in the gallery as part of their offerings for artists and art lovers.  Another change is an updated website, featuring online ordering, a manager’s blog with interesting articles, the most recent of which is titled “Procrastination Is Our Worst Enemy,” a newsletter, and a calendar listing upcoming events.    The gallery shows are scheduled through the end of the year and these events are updated on the gallery website events page along with the new artist introductions and classes. You can check out their offerings by signing for their Constant Contact e-mail posts, Facebook and Twitter pages.  The Gallery  also continues to offer their high end, professional framing, with a wide selection of options and prices, a service that benefits both artists and art buyers.

For the month of May, the Elsinore Framing and Fine Art joins winter-weary Salem residents in celebrating Oregon’s beautiful flowers with their Gallery 444 invitational show called (April Showers Bring) MAY FLOWERS.  For this exhibit a selection of 23 well-known local artists present over 40 original floral-themed pieces in media including watercolor, acrylic, oil, photography and mixed media.  Participating artists are: Brent Allen-Gallery Manager, Susan Appleby, Carolyn Canoy, Lorraine Dye, Connie Essaides, Jody Farley, Barbara Folwan, Frans Geerlings, Cynthia Herron, Becki Hesedahl, Bonnie Hickerson, Jens Lerback, Marilyn McMurray, Jim Richards, David Schatz, Jim Schomaker, Linda Sunderland, Ellen Swets, Vici Taus, Kevyn Tibbot, Graham Toms, Diane Trevett, and Kathy Wood.

May also brings a new Featured Artist Showcase.  The Featured Artist Showcase is a major part of the Elsinore’s effort to focus on local and Northwest artists, allowing artists up to 10 pieces displayed in a somewhat longer show, the option to rotate their work during the show period, and two different options for consignment.  For this showcase, artists  Rod Frederick, Gary McGuire, Susan Appleby, Marilyn McMurray and Graham Toms are highlighted.  This show will continue for at least two months.

An artist’s reception for both shows is scheduled for First Wednesday, May 3rd from 5-8 pm, with many of the participating artists in attendance and refreshments and catering by Roth’s Fresh Markets.
