RiverCity RockFest – Sunday July 10th from 4 – 8pm at Riverfront Park Amphitheater. RiverCity Rock Academy is Salem’s version of Rock School. The performers range in age from 6 to adult. I got to see a couple of the performances at Make Music Day Salem and it is very cool. They play covers, that’s how they teach them to be rock performers, but they aren’t your run of the mill covers. I saw the Rockers (age 12 -18) perform songs by Black Flag and Bikini Kill. Yeah, no Freebird here. Another sweet aspect is it will be an outdoor concert at the Riverfront Amphitheater. I was recently wondering why that wasn’t used more. Here you go. The event is free, but all donations will be collected for the Rock School Scholarship Fund. Bring a blanket and the kids and support kids loving music.
Salem Art Fair – Friday July 15th through Sunday July 17th. Yep. Gonna toot my own horn here – I got to help pick the music for the Art Fair! Nee Ner Nee Ner Neeeee Ner. I ask all local musicians to submit for next year. We had so many great performers, but I KNOW there are more. Variety is the key! In an effort to conserve space, please see the calendar for groups and performance times. Music is free with price of admission to the fair: $5 day/$10 three day pass/Free for children 12 and under. Also free for folks with an Oregon Trail card and only $3 on Saturday with student ID. Get some art in your life, for crying out loud.
Bubble Cats (pdx) and Summer Eyes – Friday, July 15th at The Space Concert Club. Doors at 7pm, show at 9pm. The Bubble Cats are coming! The Bubble Cats are coming! Did I mention I love the Bubble Cats? Well, I do and you should too. How to describe Bubble Cats besides just saying they’re awesome? They turn out these super poppy/catchy ditties and you’re so enjoying it and all of a sudden you realize they’re melting your face with some pretty shredding rock/punk/headbanging fare. But you’re loving it. Everyone is. Also on the bill is Salem indie pop sweeties Summer Eyes. Ben Thede is the main mind behind these sweetly intricate gems. They’ve got a new line up and sound better than ever: Denny McDowell guitar, Sean Pass bass, Justin Stimson drums and Ben on guitar and vocals. And hey – this is going down at The Space which is my new favorite place to see stuff. Go. $5
