The state of Oregon will tax ‘recreational’ marijuana sold through licensed dispensaries in the state.  ‘Recreational’ can be purchased through medical dispensaries from now through December 31, 2016.  After that, ‘recreational’ will be available through recreational sales stores.

As of now, the state of Oregon’s plan for taxing ‘recreational’ is:

October 1, 2015 – January 3, 2016   NO tax

January 4, 2016 – December 31, 2016    25% tax

January 1, 2017 and beyond   17% – 20% tax at recreational sales stores

The taxes collected will go to support Oregon schools, mental health, alcohol and drug services and to pay for state, county and city law enforcement and to fund Oregon Health Authority programs for alcohol and drug abuse prevention.
