Salem City Manager Linda Norris has decided to extend on-street parking in downtown Salem during the holidays!

The change means that 1260 on-street parking spaces will double their time limit (from two hours to four hours) per day per block. It will allow shoppers more leisure to explore the area during the heavy retail season. The new four-hour limits are in addition to the unlimited free parking (2331 spots) in downtown parking garages.

This is good for Salem’s citizens and good for Salem’s Downtown businesses.

The City will post signs at intersections to alert visitors of the change. The new rules will extend through January 3, 2013.

“Downtown Salem is a great place to shop and do business,” said City Council President Chuck Bennett when he announced the extension. Bennett praised Norris, and added, “I hope this change will be welcomed by holiday shoppers.”
