The Salem Public Library is looking for bands for their 7th Annual Battle of the Bands. Four bands will enter, but only one will reign supreme. The event is judged by the decibel level of the audience at the end of the night, so gather up your groupies and submit your application. Interested bands can pick up an application at any library service desk or online at salemlibrary.org. Completed applications and a recorded sample of original music are due at the library by Friday, October 14. The event is December 2.

Got an old fridge? Energy Trust of Oregon is looking for relics for their Oldest Fridge Contest. The goal is, of course, to recycle the old fridge and replace them with a new more energy efficient one. “Millions of dollars are wasted every year by older fridges lurking in our homes,” says Matt Braman, residential program manager, Energy Trust. “While they may seem handy as a back up in the basement or garage, or even nostalgic, most are not worth the cost to keep around.” To participate, owners sign up during the month of September to have their fridge recycled and receives a $50 cash incentive in return. From there, a winner will be chosen who will receive a brand new energy-efficient appliance up to $1,000 in value. Go to www.energytrust.org/fridgecontest or call 1-866-444-8907 for more information.
