The annual kids’ fun run Awesome 3000 has a new art design that’ll be featured on thousands of t-shirts and posters thanks to Kristy Brown, a senior at West Salem High School. The design features the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation’s toothy mascot “Geo.” Brown will receive $100 for the contest and a $250 contribution to West Salem High School’s art department.

Michael Steele stepped aside from the GOP chairman race, acknowledging that the “party is ready for something different.” Steele, who suggested that the GOP really needed a hip-hop makeover and used phrases like “honest injun,” rivaled only Vice President Joe Biden in gaffes. The Defense of Marriage Act was ruled unconstitutional and the appeal hearing is getting under way. Gay rights groups, in particular, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), took offense to the Obama administration’s defense of the act denying marriage to same-sex couples. “All families deserve the recognition and respect of their government. We know the President supports us. It’s time for him to help lead the American public toward full equality for all Americans,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese.

Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, active duty troops receive a lower interest rate and are protected from foreclosure.
