In Salem, the Salem Pops Orchestra will be presenting “Yuletide with the Pops” on Sunday, December 5 at 3 p.m. at the Historic Elsinore Theatre.
Mike Strickland, pianist and composer, will be featured. He’ll perform two pieces for Jazz Trio and Orchestra: a special bolero/rumba style arrangement of “Little Drummer Boy,” and his original composition, “Yuletide Dance,” that will also feature vocalist Josh Humley.
The Pops will perform “Carol of the Bells” featuring members of the Salem First Baptist Church Bell Choir under the direction of Doris Vandekoppel. Also on the program will be a variety of other Christmas music, including the popular Leroy Anderson classics “A Christmas Festival” and “Sleigh Ride.” If that’s not enough holiday cheer, they’ll also be playing music from “The Polar Express.”
Tickets are $18 for Mezzanine Reserved seating and $15 for General Admission. Student tickets are $5 and children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. They are available through the Historic Elsinore Theatre box office at 170 High Street SE, through all Safeway Tickets West outlets, by phone at 800-992-8499 and from Salem Pops members themselves.
In McMinnville, the overture to the opera “The Merry Wives of Windsor” by Otto Nicolai will take center stage on December 3 at 8 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield College. It’s described as “derived from the Shakespeare play of the same name, the overture is a humorous pastiche of some of the best melodies of the opera.”
The Linfield Chamber Orchestra will feature student concerto competition winners, Jeremy Moll (baritone) and Ryan Dickman (saxophone). The pair were chosen as the winners of the Linfield College Department of Music concerto competition and will be the featured guest artists. Michael Gesme will conduct.
“This concert is always a treat because of the excitement generated by these talented students,” said Board President Nora Stevens.
According to a release by the college, their collaboration with the Linfield Chamber Orchestra attracts “guest artists and professional musicians from across Oregon, southwest Washington, and the world.”
Single reserved tickets are $25. General admission is $18, and $5 for K-12 students. Linfield College is located at 900 SE Baker Street in McMinnville. For ticket and concert information, visit lcomusic.org or contact the chamber orchestra at 503-883-2637 or LCO@linfield.edu.
