When it comes to truly fresh Mexican food, one doesn’t have to order at the large chain restaurants – just venture into northeast Salem.
Located at 1705 Winter St. NE, Jr’s Taqueria attracts not only a large following of Hispanic patrons, but also area residents and workers looking for good eats.
While not fancy, the interior gleams with shiny, clean tabletops. There are ample windows on the restaurant’s corner storefront offering the ability to watch the world go by while eating a meal.
The restaurant offers a large picture menu filled with authentic Mexican food. With so many choices, it may be wise to go early for the decision making process. Weekdays, Jr.’s is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Many people often chat or watch music videos from Mexican artists on the television while they eat.
“Our customers are the biggest reason we do this,” said owner Victor Bascida. “I want to give them something really good.”
Some of the most popular items include the sopes, which are chicken, beef or pork, cheese and sour cream deep-fried in a thick tortilla. Three of these can tame a hearty appetite for $7. Bascida said the gorditas and tacos are always popular as well. Items can be had for as little as $1.50 for those on a limited budget.
To wash it all down, Jr’s Taqueria has fresh made horchada, a blended rice drink with cinnamon, sugar and milk. Mango and cantaloupe water are also available.
While the food may be fresh and tasty, Bascida said it all has to come with service.
“We have really good service,” he said. “You don’t have to wait too long. The food is good. This is why we keep people coming back for more.”
