Nestled near the edge of Highway 99W just south of Newberg, Duck Pond Cellars is sure to delight wine tasters, horticulture enthusiasts, and weekend shoppers alike. With immaculately landscaped grounds, a large outdoor patio and a shady deck overlooking a koi pond, guests are welcome to linger and relax, and if they’re lucky, catch one of the live jazz performances often featured on weekends throughout the summer.
Inside the winery, the tasting room features Spanish-style tile floors, warm earth-toned walls and a wide array of gourmet food products, pottery and wine accessories. Along with products exclusive to Duck Pond such as the cabernet chocolate dessert sauce made with the winery’s own wine, you’ll find specialty oils, local hazelnuts, and a small deli case with an assortment of meats, cheeses, fresh bread, and other picnic treats.
Due to its central location and easygoing atmosphere, the winery is generally quite busy during the summer months, but the welcoming staff handle the throngs with humor and ease. Duck Pond’s complimentary tasting list changes frequently but always includes a selection of at least five wines, plus a few reserve-style wines for $2 a taste.
The Willamette Valley is famous for its Pinot noir and Pinot gris, and while Duck Pond produces both, you will also find big reds such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. With vineyard holdings spanning throughout Oregon and eastern Washington, they are able to make upwards of 20 varieties each year, nearly all from estate-grown grapes. Specialty wines include Italian varietals such as Sangiovese and Barbera, a port made from Cabernet Franc, a late-harvest Semillon, and sparkling wines made in the traditional Champagne method. Bottle prices range from $8 to $40, but with an emphasis on producing quality wines at an affordable price, customers will easily find a wine they like for under $15.
If you’re interested in booking a tour of the facility, be sure to call well in advance. Their popular, private VIP tours are available for groups of two to eight people and time slots fill up quickly. The booking includes a private tour, reserve tasting, logo glass and appetizers for $20 per person. A pared-down tour and tasting is available for groups of eight to 40 guests and is only $5 per person.
