Rudy’s at Salem Golf Course on River Rd. Rudy’s has been my favorite restaurant for years. The seating is plush and comfortable, the atmosphere relaxed yet elegant, the view (of the first and tenth tees) unbeatable, the food universally excellent and moderately priced, and the service is always great. They have a full bar, a good wine list, and you don’t feel rushed. It’s best to call for reservations for evening dining, especially on the weekends. Call (503) 399-0449.Los Baez. This has been a Salem landmark for decades. I have to admit, I usually order a margarita, but I’m sure that they can recommend a good, hot winter drink. The restaurant was started in the 1970ts by Angel Baez, who emigrated from Mexico in the 1960s. It continues in the family to this day. Again, you never feel rushed here – the service is warm and friendly, the food good and very reasonably priced, and there is even a sports TV in the bar. Located on South Commercial St. Call (503) 363-3109.
Finally, I would like to recommend Tudor Rose Tea Room. Hot tea is always available, along with traditional English sandwiches and other delectables. It overlooks Mill Creek, and is conveniently located in downtown Salem. Picture doilies and tablecloths, teapots and cucumber sandwiches. It is a gracious establishment, and very reasonably priced. Enjoy strolling through the gift shop as you walk to the tea room. They are open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 480 Liberty St. SE. Call (503) 588-2345.
